Frequently Asked Questions
Which units are SI base units?
There are seven: meter (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (current), kelvin (temperature), mole (amount of substance), and candela (luminous intensity). All other SI units derive from these.
Why are conversions sometimes slightly off?
Some conversions (like inch to cm) are exact by definition (1 in = 2.54 cm), while others (like pound to kg) are defined to many decimals (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg). Rounding at intermediate steps can introduce small errors.
How accurate are tablespoon-to-gram conversions?
Volume-to-weight depends on the ingredient. 1 tbsp of water is ~15 g, but 1 tbsp of flour is ~8 g and 1 tbsp of honey is ~21 g. Always pick a converter that asks for the ingredient.
What does "imperial" mean?
Imperial units are the British system standardized in 1824. They differ from US customary units in several places (the imperial gallon is 20% larger, the imperial pint is 20 fl oz vs 16 in the US).
