Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1 KB equal to 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

In SI it is 1,000. The binary prefix kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024. Storage manufacturers use decimal (a 1 TB drive = 10^12 bytes), while operating systems often display binary, which is why your "1 TB" drive shows as 931 GB.

How big is a typical file?

A 4K photo is about 8 MB, a 1-hour 1080p video is roughly 3-4 GB, and a feature-length 4K HDR film is 50-100 GB. Streaming uses heavy compression to fit far less.

What comes after a terabyte?

Petabyte (PB), exabyte (EB), zettabyte (ZB), yottabyte (YB), each 1,000x larger. Global internet traffic is now measured in zettabytes per year.

Is bandwidth in bits or bytes?

Network speeds are quoted in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps). To get megabytes per second, divide by 8. A 100 Mbps line gives about 12.5 MB/s of throughput.
