Why does the calculator use a reference date instead of always using today?

A custom reference date lets you find your age on any past or future date, such as your age when a historical event occurred, your age at retirement, or the age you will be on a future milestone.

How are total days calculated?

By taking the exact millisecond difference between the two dates and dividing by 86,400,000 (the number of milliseconds in a day). This automatically accounts for every leap year in the span.

What happens with a Feb 29 birthday?

The next-birthday calculation looks for the nearest future Feb 29. In non-leap years the date does not exist, so the tool finds the next Feb 29 up to four years out. Age itself is still counted correctly using calendar subtraction.

Can I use this to calculate someone else's age?

Yes. Just enter their date of birth in the first field. The reference date field defaults to today but you can set it to any date to find how old they were or will be at a specific moment.

How This Calculator Works

Enter your date of birth and a reference date (today by default). The calculator returns your exact age in years, months, and days by subtracting calendar components and borrowing from the previous month when the day-of-month goes negative. It also shows your total days, weeks, and months lived, plus the days remaining until your next birthday. Because it uses real timestamps rather than multiplying by 365, leap years and varying month lengths are handled correctly.

The algorithm works in three steps: years = reference year − birth year, months = reference month − birth month, days = reference day − birth day. If days < 0, borrow the previous month's length and decrement months. If months < 0, add 12 and decrement years. Total days use the exact millisecond difference divided by 86,400,000.

Worked Example

Born 2000-02-29, measured 2024-06-15: years = 24, months = 3 (June − February = 4, reduced by 1 for the day borrow), days = 17 (15 − 29 borrows May's 31 days → 15 + 31 − 29 = 17). The total-day count uses 24 × 365.25 ≈ 8,766 days, far more accurate than a flat 24 × 365 estimate. The days-to-next-birthday figure finds the nearest future occurrence of the birth month and day on or after the reference date.

Common Mistakes

Multiplying by 365: this drifts about one day every four years because ignored leap days accumulate.

Feb 29 birthdays: the exact anniversary only occurs every four years; other years use Feb 28 or Mar 1 depending on convention.

Time zones: date inputs are read as local dates, so a birth recorded in a different time zone may shift by one day.

Confusing total months with years × 12: the months figure in the age breakdown includes the partial year beyond the last complete year.

Calendar Systems and Age Conventions

Western age counting (international standard) starts at 0 and increments on each birthday. Traditional East Asian counting started at 1 at birth and incremented on New Year's Day rather than the birthday, meaning a baby born on December 31 is already age 2 the following day by that reckoning. South Korea legally abolished this system in 2023, moving to the international standard. Some cultures also distinguish between "nominal age" and "completed age." This calculator uses the international completed-age system.
