How This Calculator Works

Pick a preset (New Year, Summer Solstice, Christmas, Valentine's Day, or Halloween - each rolls forward to next year if already past) or enter any target date and an optional event name. The calculator reads your device's clock at the moment you press the button and reports the gap as days, hours, minutes, and seconds, plus whole weeks and approximate months. Because it uses your local time zone, the result reflects your wall clock, not UTC. If the date you enter is already in the past, it tells you so rather than showing a negative countdown.

Formula and Method

The engine works in milliseconds. It computes diff = target timestamp − now timestamp, then decomposes that number: days = floor(diff ÷ 86,400,000), hours = floor((diff mod 86,400,000) ÷ 3,600,000), minutes = floor((diff mod 3,600,000) ÷ 60,000), and seconds = floor((diff mod 60,000) ÷ 1,000). The hours, minutes, and seconds are the remainder after whole days are removed, so they describe the partial day, not a separate running total. Weeks = floor(days ÷ 7) and months ≈ floor(days ÷ 30.44), using the average month length of 365.25 ÷ 12.

Worked Example

Suppose the target is exactly 100 days, 5 hours, and 30 minutes away. diff = 100 × 86,400,000 + 5 × 3,600,000 + 30 × 60,000 = 8,659,800,000 ms. Days = floor(8,659,800,000 ÷ 86,400,000) = 100. The remainder after 100 days is 19,800,000 ms; hours = floor(19,800,000 ÷ 3,600,000) = 5; the remaining 1,800,000 ms gives minutes = 30. Weeks = floor(100 ÷ 7) = 14, months ≈ floor(100 ÷ 30.44) = 3. The display reads "100 days, 5 hours, 30 minutes" alongside "14 weeks" and "3 months."
