Frequently Asked Questions
What if my cycle length varies every month?
Use your shortest recent cycle length for the most conservative fertile window estimate (this moves ovulation earlier and widens the window). Tracking 3 to 6 cycles and calculating the average gives a more reliable estimate than any single cycle. If your cycle varies by more than 7 to 10 days regularly, consider using OPKs for more precise timing.
Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?
Biologically no - conception requires a live egg and viable sperm to be present simultaneously. However, because ovulation timing can shift unexpectedly, having intercourse outside your predicted window does not guarantee you are completely outside the biological window. Ovulation can be earlier or later than expected, particularly under stress.
How does breastfeeding affect ovulation?
Exclusive breastfeeding suppresses ovulation through elevated prolactin, providing roughly 98% protection against pregnancy for the first 6 months post-birth if periods have not returned and the baby is exclusively breastfed day and night (the lactational amenorrhea method). Once periods return or breastfeeding decreases, ovulation can occur unpredictably. A healthcare provider can advise on contraception during this period.
Is the ovulation calculator accurate?
It is a statistical estimate based on average luteal phase length. Research shows that even women with regular 28-day cycles can ovulate anywhere from day 10 to day 21. For conception planning, OPKs and cervical mucus monitoring combined with this calculator provide much better precision than dates alone.
