Running Pace Calculator

Find your pace per mile or km, projected finish time for races from 5K to marathon, and the distance covered at a given pace and time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good 5K finish time for a beginner?

A beginner completing a 5K in under 40 minutes (about 12:52 min/mi) has done well. Most recreational runners target under 30 minutes (9:39 min/mi). Times under 25 minutes represent solid intermediate fitness.

Why are my marathon projections faster than my actual marathon time?

This tool projects linearly from your current pace. In a marathon, glycogen depletion around mile 20 (the 'wall'), cumulative muscle damage, and heat stress all cause most runners to slow significantly in the final third. Using Riegel's fatigue formula with a 1.06 exponent gives more realistic long-distance projections.

How do I convert between miles and kilometers for pace?

Divide a min/mile pace by 1.60934 to get min/km. For example, 8:00 min/mi = 8:00 ÷ 1.60934 ≈ 4:58 min/km. Alternatively, multiply min/km by 1.60934 to convert back to min/mi.

How do I improve my running pace?

Mix easy aerobic mileage (about 80% of your runs) with interval work at race pace or faster (20%) and one weekly tempo run at a comfortably hard effort. Consistent weekly mileage and adequate recovery drive long-term pace improvements.
