Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my true sleep need?

During a period without alarms or obligations (a vacation works well), track how long you naturally sleep once the initial rebound debt is paid off (typically 2-3 nights). The amount you sleep spontaneously for several consecutive nights approximates your biological need. Most adults land between 7 and 9 hours.

Why does this calculator use 1.5 hours as the recovery rate?

Research on short-term sleep debt recovery suggests the brain catches up on deep (slow-wave) sleep at an elevated rate during the first recovery nights, but REM sleep recovery is slower and more distributed. The 1.5-hour figure is a conservative average across both stages - actual recovery may be faster for light debt and slower for chronic deprivation.

Is time in bed the same as sleep time?

No. Sleep efficiency - the percentage of time in bed actually spent asleep - is typically 85-90% in healthy adults. If you lie awake for 30-45 minutes before falling asleep or wake frequently during the night, your actual sleep time may be substantially less than your time in bed. Enter actual sleep, not time in bed.

What are microsleeps and when do they occur?

Microsleeps are involuntary episodes of sleep lasting 1-30 seconds that occur without warning during monotonous tasks such as driving, reading, or prolonged screen work. They typically begin appearing after approximately 17 hours of continuous wakefulness and become more frequent and longer with increasing sleep debt. They are particularly dangerous while driving.
