Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate X% of Y?

Multiply: (X/100) × Y. So 15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12. Many tip and discount problems reduce to this simple formula.

What is percent change?

Percent change = (new − old) / old × 100. From 50 to 65 is +30%. Always divide by the original value, not the new one.

Why does a 50% loss require a 100% gain to break even?

A $100 stock dropping 50% becomes $50. To return to $100, the $50 must double, which is +100%. Losses and gains are not symmetric in percentage terms.

What is the difference between percentage and percentage points?

If a rate goes from 5% to 7%, that is a 2 percentage point increase but a 40% relative increase. Confusing the two is a common reporting error.
