Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the 7-year rule wrong?

The 7-year rule originated as a rough average: humans live about 70 years, dogs about 10, so dividing yields 7. But it ignores that dogs mature far faster in the first two years and that lifespan varies enormously by size. A 1-year-old dog is already sexually mature and physically adult - far more developed than a 7-year-old child. The non-linear scale in this calculator is much closer to biological reality.

Do mixed-breed dogs live longer than purebreds?

Studies suggest mixed-breed dogs live somewhat longer on average, likely due to reduced frequency of breed-specific heritable diseases. However, size remains the strongest predictor of lifespan. A large mixed-breed will typically have a shorter lifespan than a small purebred. Individual health, diet, exercise, and veterinary care matter more than purebred vs. mixed-breed status alone.

My dog is 15 years old - is that very old?

Yes, depending on size. For a small dog (under 20 lb), 15 years is equivalent to approximately 15 + 9 + (13 × 4) = 76 human years - very senior but not unusual for the size class, many small dogs reach 16-18. For a large dog (50-90 lb), 15 years equals roughly 24 + (13 × 6) = 102 human equivalent years - exceptionally old for the size class and likely requires attentive senior care.

At what age should I switch my dog to senior food?

Generally when your dog enters the mature-adult or senior life stage by the calculator's estimate, or roughly at 7 years for medium dogs and 5-6 years for large and giant breeds. Senior diets typically have adjusted protein, fat, and joint-support nutrients. However, the best indicator is your dog's body condition and health, not age alone. Discuss the transition timing with your veterinarian.
