Solar Panel Calculator

Estimate how many solar panels you need to power your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many solar panels do I need?

Annual kWh ÷ (panel wattage × peak sun hours × 365 × system efficiency ≈ 0.8). A 10,000 kWh home with 400 W panels at 5 sun hours needs about 17 panels.

What are peak sun hours?

Equivalent hours of full 1,000 W/m² sunlight per day. The US ranges from about 3.5 (Pacific Northwest) to 6+ (Southwest). A panel's output scales with this.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes, but at reduced output - typically 10-25% of peak. They still produce energy from diffuse light, just much less than in direct sun.

How long do solar panels last?

25-30 years with gradual output decline (~0.5% per year). Most manufacturers warranty 80-85% performance at 25 years.
