Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my vehicle's real-world fuel economy?

Fill the tank, reset your trip odometer, drive normally until you need to fill again, then divide the miles driven by the gallons it took to refill. Repeat over several tanks for an accurate average. This beats the EPA sticker, which is a lab estimate. The FuelEconomy.gov database also has crowd-sourced real-world MPG data by make, model, and year.

How does speed affect fuel economy?

Most gasoline vehicles reach peak efficiency at 50 to 55 mph. Above that, aerodynamic drag increases as the square of speed, so fuel consumption grows rapidly. Driving at 75 mph instead of 65 mph typically uses 10 to 15% more fuel; at 85 mph the penalty reaches 20 to 30%.

When is flying cheaper than driving?

Per person when traveling alone or two people, flying often beats driving for distances over 600 miles once you factor in hotel nights for a multi-day drive and the value of your time. For groups of three or four, the per-person driving cost is hard to beat even on long trips.

What is L/100km and how do I convert it to MPG?

Liters per 100 km is the fuel consumption rate used in most countries outside the US. To convert: MPG = 235.2 ÷ L/100km. So 7 L/100km ≈ 33.6 MPG. Lower L/100km means better fuel economy, while higher MPG means better fuel economy.
