Towing & Payload Calculator

Check payload, max trailer weight, and tongue weight against GVWR and GCWR limits

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between payload and towing capacity?

Payload is everything you put IN/ON the truck (people, cargo, hitch/tongue weight), limited by GVWR. Towing capacity is what you pull behind it, limited by GCWR. The calculator checks both.

How is available payload found?

Payload = GVWR − curb weight. Subtract passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight; what remains must stay positive. Max trailer = GCWR − actual loaded truck weight.

What is tongue weight and why does it matter?

The downward force the trailer puts on the hitch, ideally 10–15% of trailer weight. Too little causes dangerous sway; too much overloads the rear axle and counts against payload.

Where do I find my exact limits?

GVWR and tire/axle ratings are on the driver door-jamb sticker; GCWR and tow ratings are in the owner's manual for your exact configuration. Always use vehicle-specific numbers, not brochure maximums.
