Vig & Hold Calculator

Calculate the bookmaker vig, overround, and hold and the fair no-vig probabilities

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the vig (or overround)?

The vig is the bookmaker's built-in margin. Sum the implied probabilities of all outcomes; the amount above 100% (the overround) is the edge. A two-way market summing to 105% has a ~4.8% hold.

How is the hold percentage calculated?

Hold = (overround − 1) ÷ overround, expressed as a percent of total stakes the book expects to keep. It is the long-run cost to bettors and the reason the house wins over time.

What are no-vig fair probabilities?

Divide each outcome's implied probability by the total (overround) so they sum to 100%. This estimates a margin-free price for analysis only - it does not remove the real-world house edge you face.

What is a typical hold?

Common point-spread markets hold around 4–5%; longer-odds and prop markets can hold 10–30%+. Lower-hold markets are less unfavorable, but every bet still carries a negative expected value over time.
