How This Calculator Works

Working backward from your target take-home income, this calculator finds the hourly rate you must charge as a freelancer. It accounts for the things employees never see on a paycheck: self-employment tax, business expenses, unpaid vacation, and - critically - the gap between hours worked and hours you can actually bill. Enter your income goal, annual expenses, effective tax rate, vacation weeks, and billable hours per week; the result is the minimum rate that keeps you whole.

Why Your Rate Isn't Salary ÷ 2,080

A $60,000 salary is not $29/hr as a freelancer. Employees get an employer covering half of FICA (7.65%), paid time off, health insurance, and equipment. Freelancers pay 100% of self-employment tax (15.3% up to the wage base), buy their own benefits, and - the biggest factor - only bill a fraction of working hours. A realistic conversion is roughly salary × 1.5 to 2.0 to reach equivalent take-home, before accounting for the risk premium freelancing should command.

The Billable-Hours Reality

This is where most new freelancers undercharge. A 50-hour work week rarely yields 50 billable hours. Time goes to: sales and proposals, admin and invoicing, marketing, learning, and bench time between clients. Industry surveys put sustainable billable utilization at 50–70% - so 25–35 billable hours from a 50-hour week. Every non-billable hour must be recovered in the rate you charge for billable ones.

What Else to Build Into Your Rate

Self-employment tax: 15.3% SECA plus income tax - set aside 25–35% of every payment.

Benefits replacement: health insurance, retirement (Solo 401k/SEP-IRA), disability - often $8,000–$20,000/yr a job would have covered.

Business expenses: software, equipment, home office, professional development, liability insurance.

Non-billable time: sales, admin, marketing - typically 30–50% of working hours.

Risk premium: no severance, no unemployment insurance, income volatility, and clients who pay late or not at all.

Profit: a freelance practice should earn more than "break-even salary equivalent" - build in margin to grow.

Setting and Raising Your Rate

Treat the calculated number as your floor, not your price. Market rate, your specialization, portfolio strength, and client value created should push the actual quote higher. Raise rates with new clients first (lower risk than renegotiating existing ones), annually at minimum, and whenever you're consistently booked solid - a full pipeline is the clearest signal you're priced too low. Charging by project or value rather than the hour can decouple income from hours entirely.
