Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as total compensation?

This calculator sums base salary, annual bonus, the annualized value of equity or RSU grants, and the dollar value of the employer 401(k) match. Base salary alone often hides large differences in the full package.

How do I value equity or RSUs per year?

Divide the total grant value by its vesting period in years to get an annual figure. Public-company RSUs are easy to value; private startup equity is far harder and depends on strike price, valuation, and dilution.

Why include the 401(k) match?

An employer match is free money. A 5% match on a $120,000 salary is $6,000 a year you would forfeit by ignoring it, so it belongs in any honest comparison of total pay.

Does the highest total comp always mean the best offer?

No. This tool compares pay only. Cost of living, health benefits, PTO, remote flexibility, equity upside, and career growth can outweigh a higher number. Use total comp as a first filter, then weigh the intangibles.

Should I include the bonus in the comparison if it is not guaranteed?

Yes, but with caution. Include the target bonus and note the historical payout rate. A 20% target bonus that historically pays out at 80% is worth about 16% of base salary on average, which is very different from an "up to 20%" promise that is rarely hit.

Can I compare two offers even if one has no equity?

Yes. Just leave the equity field at zero for that offer. The calculator only sums the fields you fill in, so comparing any mix of components is perfectly valid.
