Frequently Asked Questions

How is market share calculated?

Market share = Your revenue / Total market revenue. Or unit-based: Your units / Total units. Revenue share is more common. Be careful with market definition - narrow definitions overstate share, broad definitions understate it. Stick to consistent definition over time.

What's a good market share?

Depends on market structure. Fragmented markets: 5% can be #1. Oligopolies: 20-30% needed for relevance. Winner-take-all (search, social): 50%+ needed. Bigger markets generally allow lower individual share to be valuable.

Should I focus on growing share or expanding the market?

Early stage: grow market (educate customers about category). Mid-stage: take share from incumbents. Late stage: expand TAM via new segments or geographies. Mature markets favor share expansion. Growing markets favor riding the tide while building category leadership.

Why does the calculator show years-to-target when I already exceed my target share?

If your current revenue already produces a share equal to or above the target, the calculator shows 0 years. When the gap is negative (you have already passed it), the required-growth field will also read zero or negative.

What sources can I use for total market size?

Market research reports (Gartner, IDC, Statista), sector data from industry associations, annual reports from publicly traded competitors, and analyst estimates. Be explicit about whether the figure is TAM, SAM, or SOM, and always cite the source.

Does a high market share guarantee profitability?

No. High share correlates with profitability when it delivers real cost or differentiation advantages. You can hold a 30% share and still lose money if you won it with below-cost pricing or your fixed costs are too high for the current volume.
