Frequently Asked Questions
How much mulch do I need?
Cubic yards = (Length × Width × Depth) ÷ 27, with all dimensions in feet. A 100 sq ft bed at 3" deep needs 100 × 0.25 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.93 cubic yards. One cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft at 3" depth or 162 sq ft at 2".
How deep should I apply mulch?
2–3 inches is standard for established beds and trees. Going deeper than 4 inches can suffocate roots, harbor pests, and cause "volcano mulching" damage on tree trunks. Refresh annually by adding 1 inch on top - not by stacking 3 new inches every year.
How do bagged and bulk mulch compare?
Bagged mulch is typically sold in 2 cubic foot bags - 13.5 bags equal one cubic yard. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper per cubic yard (often half the price of bags) but requires a truck-accessible drop site and same-day spreading to avoid driveway stains.
