Frequently Asked Questions

How much soil for a raised garden bed?

A 4x8 ft raised bed at 12 inches deep needs 32 ft³ or 1.2 yd³ of soil. Mix 50 percent topsoil, 30 percent compost, 20 percent vermiculite or peat moss for best plant growth - the Mel Bartholomew 'Square Foot Gardening' formula.

Is bagged or bulk soil cheaper?

Bulk is dramatically cheaper above 1 yd³. Bagged topsoil retails at $4-6 per 40lb bag ($20-30 per cubic yard equivalent). Bulk delivery runs $25-40 per yard delivered. For projects under 1 yd³, bags are convenient enough to justify the markup.

Do I need to amend the soil?

Yes for most uses. Pure topsoil is mineral-heavy. Add 25-30 percent compost for nutrients and water retention. For acid-loving plants (blueberries, azaleas), add peat moss. For clay-heavy ground, add gypsum and coarse sand to improve drainage.
