Frequently Asked Questions
How many cubic yards is a ton of sand?
About 0.74 cubic yards for dry sand (2,700 lb/yd³ density). 1 ton ÷ 2,700 lb/yd³ x 2,000 lb = 0.74 yd³. Wet sand: 0.63 yd³ per ton. Always confirm density with your supplier - it varies by source and moisture.
What is masonry sand?
Fine-grained, clean sand specifically graded for mortar mixing. Particle size is more uniform than all-purpose sand, which gives mortar consistent workability. Slightly more expensive than play sand or fill sand.
Should I order extra sand?
Yes - 5-10 percent extra accounts for compaction settling and minor waste. For paver projects add 15 percent because you will sweep additional sand into joints over time. Bulk sand is cheap; second deliveries cost much more.
