How This Calculator Works

The calculator multiplies length by width by sand depth (converted to feet) to get cubic feet of sand. Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27. Weight uses a density of 100 lb/cu ft for dry paver sand (a widely used average). Bags are based on a 60-lb bag covering approximately 0.5 cubic feet when spread.

Formula: volume_cuft = L x W x (depth_in / 12). Tons = volume_cuft x 100 / 2000.

Recommended Sand Depth for Pavers

The ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) standard for paver bedding sand is 1 inch (25mm) after compaction. This applies to most paver and concrete paver installations over a compacted gravel base:

Concrete pavers and brick: 1 inch bedding sand

Natural flagstone (irregular): 1-2 inches for leveling

Heavy-use areas or thick slabs: 1-1.5 inches

Do not use more than 1.5 inches of bedding sand. Thick sand layers compress under load and allow pavers to settle unevenly. The compacted gravel base (not the sand) provides structural support.

Sand Types for Paver Installation

Use the right sand for each layer:

Bedding sand (coarse concrete sand / ASTM C-33): goes directly under the pavers. Angular particles lock together and resist movement.

Polymeric sand: fills joints between pavers. Contains binders that harden after wetting to prevent ant intrusion and weed growth. Do not use as bedding.

Mason sand / fill sand: too fine for bedding - particles migrate and cause settling.

This calculator covers bedding sand only. Joint sand (polymeric or regular) is calculated separately at about 50 lbs per 100 sq ft depending on joint width.

Can I use play sand or mason sand for paver bedding?

No. Play sand and mason sand are too fine and will migrate under pavers causing uneven settling. Use coarse concrete sand (ASTM C-33) or crushed granite with angular particles. Check with your supplier.

Do I need polymeric sand in the joints?

Polymeric sand is strongly recommended for paver joints. It hardens to prevent ant intrusion, weed seeds from germinating between pavers, and joint sand from washing away in rain. Calculate joint sand separately - this calculator covers bedding sand only.

How thick should the gravel base be?

ICPI recommends 4-6 inches of compacted gravel base for residential pedestrian areas, 6-8 inches for driveways. The gravel base provides drainage and structural support. The sand layer is for leveling only, not structure.
