Why are holidays not excluded automatically?

Public holiday calendars vary by country, state, and company. Rather than guess which holidays apply to you, the tool gives you the raw Monday-Friday count and lets you subtract relevant holidays.

How many working days are in a typical month?

About 21 to 23 working days per month, depending on how many weekends fall in it. A full year has roughly 260 to 262 working days before holidays.

Can I count backward?

Yes. In 'Add working days' mode, enter a negative number to step into the past. For example, -5 working days finds the date five business days before the start.

Does the 'between' result include the start and end dates?

Yes. If both the start and end dates are weekdays, they are both counted. A range from Monday to Friday (5 days) returns 5 working days.

How This Calculator Works

Pick one of two modes. Days between dates counts every Monday through Friday from a start date to an end date, both inclusive. Add working days steps forward (or backward with a negative number) from a start date, skipping Saturdays and Sundays, until it has counted the requested number of business days, then reports the landing date. Both modes iterate one calendar day at a time and test each day's weekday, so weekends are always excluded. Public holidays are not subtracted - remove them manually for true working days.

Method

A day counts as a weekday when its day-of-week index is not 0 (Sunday) or 6 (Saturday). For the between mode, the counter walks from start to end adding 1 for each weekday. For the add mode, the pointer moves ±1 day per step and increments only on weekdays until the target count is reached, then reports the landing date. Negative values step backward in time.

Worked Example

Add 10 working days to a Friday. Days 1 through 5 land on the following Monday through Friday; days 6 through 10 land on the Monday through Friday after that. The result is the second Friday from the start - 14 calendar days later, not 10. This is a common source of confusion: a two-week calendar span contains only 10 working days when both weekends are excluded.

Shipping and delivery: carriers quote delivery windows in business days, not calendar days.

HR deadlines: response periods, notice periods, and offer acceptance windows.

Financial processing: bank transfer settlement, stock trade settlement (T+2), and payment terms (net 30 business days).

Common Mistakes and FAQ

Confusing business days with calendar days: "10 days from Friday" differs by nearly a week between the two measures.

Expecting holidays to be removed: this tool excludes weekends only. Subtract local public holidays manually.

Assuming a Mon-Fri week everywhere: some regions (several Middle Eastern countries, Israel) rest on different days.

Between mode is inclusive: both endpoints count when they fall on weekdays.
