How This Calculator Works

Heading into finals week, the most useful number is not "do well" but the exact score you must hit. You enter your current grade (everything graded before the final), the percentage of your course grade the final exam carries, and the overall grade you are aiming for. The calculator solves the weighted-average equation backward to reveal the minimum final-exam score you need, and tells you whether that goal is comfortably reachable, challenging, already locked in, or mathematically impossible without extra credit.

Formula

Your overall grade combines two weighted pieces: overall = current × (1 − final_weight) + final_score × final_weight, where final_weight is the exam's percentage divided by 100. Setting overall equal to your target and solving for the unknown final score gives: needed = (target − current × (1 − final_weight)) ÷ final_weight. A result above 100 is impossible without extra credit; a result at or below 0 means your target is already secured regardless of the final.

Worked Example

Current grade 82%, final worth 40% (final_weight = 0.40), target 90%: needed = (90 − 82 × (1 − 0.40)) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 82 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 49.2) ÷ 0.40 = 40.8 ÷ 0.40 = 102%. Because 102% exceeds 100, a 90 overall is not attainable on the exam alone. Lower the target to 88% and you would need (88 − 49.2) ÷ 0.40 = 97% - hard but possible. Lower it to 85% and the required score drops to 88.5%, which is achievable with strong preparation.

Common Mistakes

Including the final in your current grade. Enter only the grade based on completed work; the final is the unknown you are solving for.

Entering the weight as a decimal. Type the percentage (e.g. 40), not 0.40 - the calculator divides by 100 for you.

Confusing the final's weight with its total points. Weight is the percentage contribution to the course grade, not how many questions are on the exam.

Thinking a result above 100% means you failed. It means your target is not reachable with the final alone; consider a revised target or extra credit.

Forgetting that a needed score at or below 0 means you have already met the goal. Any passing score on the final keeps you above target.
