How is this different from the Grade Weighted Average calculator?

Both use the same weighted-average formula. This calculator is organized by named course categories (homework, midterm, final) with default labels to match a typical syllabus. The Grade Weighted Average calculator uses a simpler two-column table for grades and weights without category names, making it better for quick ad-hoc calculations.

What if my course uses points, not percentages?

Convert each category to a percentage before entering: percentage = (points_earned ÷ points_possible) × 100. Alternatively, contact your instructor or check your gradebook - most learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) display category grades as percentages alongside the point totals.

What grade do I need on the final to get a specific course grade?

Use the Final Grade Calculator instead. It solves the weighted-average equation backward from your current grade, the final's weight, and your target to find the exact final-exam score you need.

What if one of my grades is not available yet?

Leave that category's grade field blank. The tool will exclude it from the calculation and show your current grade based only on the completed categories. Re-enter the grade once it is available to get the full picture.

How This Calculator Works

Add a row for each grade category in your course - homework, midterm, final, participation, labs, and so on - with your percentage grade in that category and its weight toward the course total. The tool ignores any row missing a grade or weight, multiplies each grade by its weight, sums the products, and divides by the total weight entered. It then maps the result to a US letter grade on the standard plus/minus scale.

Formula

Weighted grade = Σ(grade_i × weight_i) ÷ Σ(weight_i). Because it divides by the total of the weights you entered, the result is mathematically correct even if your weights do not sum to 100. Letter grade scale: 93%+ = A, 90–92% = A−, 87–89% = B+, 83–86% = B, 80–82% = B−, 77–79% = C+, 73–76% = C, 70–72% = C−, 67–69% = D+, 60–66% = D, below 60% = F.

Worked Example

Homework 95 at weight 20%, midterm 78 at weight 30%, final 88 at weight 40%, participation 100 at weight 10%: weighted sum = (95 × 20) + (78 × 30) + (88 × 40) + (100 × 10) = 1,900 + 2,340 + 3,520 + 1,000 = 8,760. Total weight = 100. Grade = 8,760 ÷ 100 = 87.6%, a B+. If you left participation blank (weight 0 rows are excluded): sum = 7,760, total weight = 90, grade = 7,760 ÷ 90 = 86.2%, a B. Always fill in all categories for the most accurate result.

Common Mistakes

Leaving a category blank when you meant to include it. Rows with no grade or weight are silently skipped, which can significantly distort the result.

Entering points earned instead of a percentage grade. Each grade field expects a percentage (0–100), not raw points out of a different total.

Assuming weights must sum to 100. The tool normalizes by whatever total you enter, but a note appears when they do not sum to 100 as a reminder to double-check.

Forgetting to update the final-exam row when running what-if scenarios. Change only the grade you are modeling; leave other categories as they are.

Tips and FAQ

Why weight categories? Weights reflect how heavily each assessment counts toward your final grade. A cumulative final exam worth 40% has four times the impact of a homework category worth 10%, so improving on it matters far more per point gained. Where should I focus my effort? Raising a grade in a high-weight category moves your overall grade far more than the same gain in a low-weight one. If your final is worth 40%, each percentage point on the final is worth 0.4 points overall. Can I add my own categories? Yes - use the Add Category button to insert rows and name them to match your syllabus exactly. What if my grade is curved? Enter the post-curve percentage for that category; the calculator does not need to know how the curve was applied.
