Frequently Asked Questions

What is an average reading speed for adults?

Research by Brysbaert (2019) using data from over 17,000 readers found the average adult silent reading speed for fiction and general nonfiction is about 238 words per minute. Comprehension-adjusted rates for technical material drop to 100–150 WPM.

How long does it take to read a 200-page book?

A 200-page book is roughly 50,000 words. At 238 WPM, that takes about 210 minutes (3 hours 30 minutes) of reading time. Spreading that over 30 minutes per day, you would finish in about 7 days.

Is 400 WPM a realistic speed-reading goal?

For fiction and familiar non-fiction, yes - 400 WPM is achievable with deliberate practice and strong vocabulary. Speed-reading courses claiming 1,000–2,000 WPM with full comprehension are not supported by scientific evidence; studies show comprehension drops sharply above 400–500 WPM.

How do I measure my actual reading speed?

Time yourself reading a passage of known word count for exactly one minute, then count how many words you reached. Repeat three times and average the results. Alternatively, time yourself reading a full article or chapter, then divide total word count by total minutes.
