Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Level 2 home charger cost?
Hardware: $300-$700 for a quality Level 2 unit (Wallbox, ChargePoint, Tesla, JuiceBox, Grizzl-E). Installation: $500-$1,200 for a straightforward run (under 25 ft from panel, existing 200A panel); $1,500-$3,500 for longer runs, trenching, or panel upgrades. Total turnkey is usually $1,000-$2,500. The federal AFV credit (Section 30C) covers 30% of installation cost up to $1,000 through 2032.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel?
A Level 2 charger typically needs a 30-50A 240V circuit. If you have a 200A panel and reasonable load on it, no upgrade is needed. If you have a 100A panel - common in homes built before 1990 - you likely need either a panel upgrade ($1,500-$4,000) or a smart charger with load management that throttles when other large loads run. Have a licensed electrician do a load calc.
Level 1 vs Level 2 - which is right for me?
Level 1 (120V standard outlet): 3-5 miles of range per hour, $0 install. Adequate if you drive under 30-40 miles/day and have all night to charge. Level 2 (240V, 30-50A): 25-40 miles per hour, $1,000-$2,500 install. Necessary for higher-mileage drivers, two-EV households, or vehicles with larger batteries. Level 3 DC fast charging is not practical for home use.
Are there state and utility rebates?
Many - varying widely. California (CALeVIP, utility programs) up to $2,000+. New York ChargeReady up to $4,000. Massachusetts MassEVIP. Many utilities (PG&E, ConEd, Eversource, Xcel) offer $250-$1,500 charger rebates. Some require enrollment in time-of-use rate plans. Check the DSIRE database (dsireusa.org) for your zip code.
