Series vs. Parallel - Physical Intuition

Placing capacitors in parallel connects both sets of plates side by side. The effective plate area doubles with two identical capacitors, and capacitance scales directly with area, so the total capacitance simply adds. Capacitor Combinations in Real Circuits

Real capacitors are not ideal. Every capacitor has an equivalent series resistance (ESR) and an equivalent series inductance (ESL). ESR causes power loss (P = I² × ESR) and limits how quickly a capacitor can deliver charge. ESL sets a self-resonant frequency; above that frequency the component behaves more like an inductor than a capacitor. Ceramic capacitors have very low ESR and very low ESL, making them the best choice for high-frequency bypass close to IC power pins. Electrolytic capacitors have higher ESR and higher ESL but offer much greater capacitance per unit volume, making them ideal for bulk energy storage. Capacitor Selection and Tolerances

Ceramic capacitors are available in several dielectric grades that affect stability and accuracy. X5R and X7R dielectrics offer capacitance tolerances of roughly ±15% but are stable enough for most bypass and coupling applications. C0G (NP0) dielectrics have a temperature coefficient below ±30 ppm/°C and hold their value precisely over temperature, making them the first choice for timing circuits, oscillators, and precision filters where a stable capacitance matters.

Electrolytic capacitors typically carry a ±20% tolerance and are polarized: reversing the polarity can destroy them within seconds. Always observe polarity markings and leave adequate headroom between the operating voltage and the rated voltage. Film capacitors (polyester, polypropylene) offer tolerances of ±1 to ±5% and age very gracefully, making them popular for audio crossovers, timing networks, and signal coupling where long-term stability is required.

A critical but often overlooked factor in ceramic capacitors is DC bias derating. High-K ceramics (X5R, X7R) lose significant capacitance when a DC voltage is applied - sometimes 50% or more at rated voltage. The safest approach is to select a ceramic capacitor rated at twice the operating voltage to ensure the actual in-circuit capacitance stays close to the nominal value.

Common Failure Modes

Ceramic capacitors can fracture from thermal shock during soldering if heated or cooled too quickly; the result is a latent crack that may not show up immediately but eventually causes intermittent shorts. Electrolytic capacitors fail when operated near their temperature rating for extended periods: the electrolyte evaporates, ESR rises, capacitance falls, and the capacitor may eventually vent gas through the safety vent on top. Film capacitors are the most forgiving: they tend to fail open rather than short and degrade gradually, making them predictable for safety-critical timing applications.
