Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate profit and loss on crypto trades?

P&L = (sell price − buy price) × quantity − fees on both sides. If you bought 0.5 BTC at $40,000 ($20,000 plus $50 fee) and sold at $60,000 ($30,000 minus $75 fee), your profit is $30,000 − $20,000 − $50 − $75 = $9,875. Always include exchange fees, network/gas fees, and any spread to get a true picture of returns.

How are crypto gains taxed in the US?

The IRS treats crypto as property. Selling, trading one crypto for another, or spending crypto on goods are taxable events. Held over a year: long-term capital gains rates (0%/15%/20%). Held under a year: ordinary income rates (up to 37%). Each disposal must be reported on Form 8949; exchanges issue Form 1099-DA starting with 2025 transactions.

What is tax-loss harvesting in crypto?

Selling a losing position to realize a capital loss offsets gains elsewhere and up to $3,000/year of ordinary income. Crypto is currently exempt from the wash-sale rule that applies to stocks, so investors can sell at a loss and immediately repurchase the same coin - a meaningful tax-planning advantage. (This may change as legislation evolves.)

Why is my actual profit lower than the price difference?

Trading costs erode returns. Centralized exchanges typically charge 0.1%–0.6% per trade. On-chain DEX trades incur gas fees plus liquidity-pool fees, often 0.3%–1%. Bid-ask spreads can add another 0.1%–2% on illiquid pairs. Across a buy and sell, total round-trip costs of 1%–4% are common - always factor them into expected returns.
