Frequently Asked Questions

How is unrealized gain or loss calculated?

Unrealized P&L = (current price − cost basis) × quantity held. If you bought 1 ETH at $2,000 and it's currently $3,500, unrealized gain is $1,500 (75%). The gain is "unrealized" because you haven't sold - no taxable event has occurred. Only realized gains (after a sale or trade) trigger US tax obligations.

How should I track cost basis for crypto?

Record the price (in USD) at the time of each purchase, plus fees. Keep CSV exports from each exchange - they may not be available years later. For multiple purchases of the same coin, the IRS allows specific identification, FIFO, or HIFO; HIFO (highest in, first out) often minimizes taxable gains when prices have risen overall.

How much of my portfolio should be in crypto?

Most mainstream financial advisors suggest 0%–5% of investable assets for crypto if any exposure at all, treating it as a high-volatility speculative asset. The asset can swing 50%+ in a year, so size positions to amounts you can afford to lose entirely. Never invest emergency funds, debt-financed money, or near-term goal money in crypto.

What is portfolio rebalancing in crypto?

Rebalancing is selling assets that have grown above their target allocation and buying those that have shrunk, restoring your target weights. In crypto's extreme volatility, rebalancing on big swings can boost returns by selling high and buying low - but in taxable accounts, rebalancing trades create taxable events. Many investors set quarterly or threshold-based (e.g., ±5%) rebalancing rules.
