Historical Inflation Calculator

Convert dollar amounts between any two years from 1950 to 2025 using actual BLS CPI data

Frequently Asked Questions

What CPI series does this use?

It uses annual average CPI-U, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is the most widely cited US inflation measure.

Why does the 2025 end year use 2024 data?

The full-year 2025 annual average CPI is not yet available. The calculator uses the 2024 annual average as a proxy, so results for 2025 will be close but not exact.

How accurate is the data?

The embedded values match BLS annual averages to one decimal place and are accurate for historical context. For precise official figures, use the BLS CPI calculator at bls.gov.

Why did prices barely rise in some years and spike in others?

Inflation is driven by supply, demand, monetary policy, and global shocks. The 1970s spike reflects oil embargoes and loose monetary policy. The 2021 to 2022 surge was driven by pandemic supply-chain disruption and stimulus spending.
