Cooler Ice Calculator

Estimate how many pounds of ice and 7-lb bags your cooler needs per trip

Frequently Asked Questions

How much ice does my cooler need?

Budget about 0.5 lb of ice per quart of cooler as a base, then scale up for each day and for warmer climates. The calculator does this and rounds the 7-lb bag count up.

Should I use block ice or cubed ice?

Use both. Block ice melts slowly and is ideal for the bottom layer on long trips, while cubed or loose ice chills food fast and fills gaps around the contents.

How do I make ice last longer?

Pre-chill the cooler and its contents the night before, keep it in the shade, and open it as little as possible. A warm cooler can burn through your first bag of ice quickly.

Should I drain the meltwater?

Cold meltwater actually helps insulate, so leaving the drain plug closed can extend ice life. Drain it only if food packaging could get waterlogged.
