Reel Line Capacity Calculator

Convert a reel rated line capacity to a different line size or pound test

Frequently Asked Questions

How does line diameter affect reel capacity?

Capacity scales with the inverse square of line diameter, so cap2 = cap1 x (d1/d2) squared. Switching to thinner line lets you wind on more yards; thicker line fits less.

Can I use this for braided line?

The pound-test mapping here is for monofilament. Braid is far thinner per pound of strength, so enter the diameter (mm) printed on the braid spool directly rather than its pound test, or you will badly underestimate capacity.

Why is the result only an estimate?

Real capacity varies with how tightly you wind the line, the spool arbor shape, line stiffness, and manufacturer diameter tolerances. Leave some freeboard below the spool lip to avoid wind knots.

My reel lists capacity in pound test, not millimeters. What do I do?

Choose the pound-test mode. The calculator maps common mono ratings to typical diameters (6 lb ~0.23 mm up to 30 lb ~0.53 mm) and interpolates between them automatically.
