How is trolling depth calculated from line angle?
It uses geometry: running depth = line out x cos(angle from vertical), and horizontal setback = line out x sin(angle). A line near vertical runs deep and close; a flat line runs shallow and far back.
Will my lure really run at this depth?
Not exactly. This is straight-line geometry. True dive depth also depends on lure design, added weight, line diameter, and especially boat speed, so confirm with a dive chart or line counter.
How do I get my lure to run deeper?
Slow down, let out more line, or add weight to steepen the line angle. Thin braided line also cuts the water at a steeper angle than thick mono and dives deeper for the same length out.
What does an angle of 0 degrees mean here?
Zero degrees from vertical means the line goes straight down, so the running depth equals the full length of line let out and the horizontal setback is zero.
