Cycling Calorie Calculator

Estimate calories burned cycling by speed bracket, ride duration or distance, and body weight

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does cycling burn per hour?

Roughly 400–1,000+ kcal/hour depending on speed and weight. A 70 kg rider burns ~480 kcal/hr at a leisurely <10 mph (MET 4.0), ~560 at 10–12 mph (MET 6.8), and ~840+ at a hard 16–19 mph (MET 12.0).

Why are calories bracketed by speed?

Aerodynamic drag rises with the cube of speed, so cycling intensity (MET) jumps sharply at higher speeds rather than scaling linearly. The calculator uses standard speed-bracket MET values to capture this.

Does this account for wind, hills, or drafting?

No - it is a flat-road, no-wind estimate. Climbing and headwinds raise expenditure substantially; drafting and descents lower it. A power meter is the only precise method. This estimate is for general guidance only - work with a qualified coach or sports medicine professional before pushing limits or recovering from injury.

Is indoor cycling the same as road cycling?

Calorie burn is similar for matched effort, but stationary bikes lack coasting and air resistance, so steady indoor efforts can burn comparably or more per minute. Use the speed bracket that matches your perceived effort.
