FFMI Calculator

Calculate Fat-Free Mass Index to assess your muscular development relative to height. The natty threshold is ~25 FFMI.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is FFMI?

Fat-Free Mass Index = lean mass (kg) / height (m)². Like BMI but for muscle. Normalized (adjusted to 1.8 m height) FFMI of ~25 is considered the upper limit of natural muscular development per a 1995 Kouri et al. paper.

What FFMI is "natural"?

Per the 1995 study comparing steroid users and non-users: untrained men ~18; trained natural athletes 22–24; the upper natural limit is around 25 (normalized). Some elite genetic outliers exceed this. Women's natural FFMI tends to top out around 19–22.

How do I get an accurate FFMI?

You need an accurate body fat measurement first. DEXA is the gold standard; skinfolds and BIA scales add error. Inaccurate body-fat estimates can swing FFMI by 1–2 points.

Should I use FFMI as a target?

As a long-term progress marker, yes. As a short-term goal, no - natural muscle gain is slow (often <1 kg/year for trained lifters). Chasing high FFMI rapidly often reflects measurement error or unsustainable methods. This estimate is for general guidance only - work with a qualified coach or sports medicine professional before pushing limits or recovering from injury.
