Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed (mph) = 60 / pace (min/mi); pace (min/mi) = 60 / speed (mph). For metric: speed (km/h) = 60 / pace (min/km). Example: 8:00/mi pace = 7.5 mph = 12.07 km/h.
Why are running and cycling paces so different?
Running pace is typically minutes per mile or km; cycling speed is reported in mph or km/h because efficiency varies wildly with terrain and aerodynamics. Swimming uses min/100 m or min/100 yd. Always check units before comparing numbers.
How does grade affect running pace?
Each 1% uphill grade slows pace by roughly 12-15 sec/mi at moderate efforts; downhill helps less than uphill hurts. On hilly terrain, heart rate or perceived effort is more useful than pace.
Why is my GPS pace different from a track measurement?
GPS error is typically 3-5% over short distances; tunnels, tree cover, and urban canyons make it worse. Track lap measurements are exact (400 m in lane 1). For intervals, trust the track; for road runs, trust the mile or km splits more than per-second pace.
