Walking Pace Calculator

Solve for walking distance, total time, or pace per mile and kilometer from any two known values

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good walking pace?

Casual walking is ~2.5–3 mph (20–24 min/mile); brisk walking - the pace linked to health benefits - is ~3.5–4 mph (15–17 min/mile); fast/power walking is 4.5+ mph (under 13 min/mile). A "brisk" pace is one where you can talk but not sing.

How does the three-way solver work?

Distance, time, and pace are linked by pace = time ÷ distance. Enter any two and the third is computed. The tool also reports average speed in mph and km/h and pace per mile and per kilometer.

How is walking pace different from running pace?

The math is identical (time per distance); only the typical values differ. Walking is usually expressed in mph or min/mile in the 13–24 min/mile range, whereas easy running is typically 8–12 min/mile.

Does terrain affect walking pace targets?

Significantly. Hills, trails, sand, and elevation slow pace for the same effort, so heart rate or perceived exertion is a better intensity guide than pace alone on varied terrain.
