How This Calculator Works

Sod is sold by area, but it never quite lays edge to edge the way the math suggests - curves, slopes, odd corners, and the trimming that happens at every border all eat into a roll. This calculator takes your yard's footprint (length × width, or a direct square-footage figure for an irregular space), adds a waste allowance for those cuts and gaps, then converts the result into the two units suppliers actually quote: pallets (a typical pallet covers about 450 sq ft) and individual rolls (a standard roll is roughly 2 ft × 5 ft = 10 sq ft). If you enter a price per square foot it also estimates the total material cost so you can budget before you call the sod farm.

Measuring Odd-Shaped Yards

A rectangle is easy, but most lawns are not rectangles. Break a complicated yard into simple shapes - rectangles, triangles, and circles - measure each, and add the areas together, then enter the sum using the "total square feet" option. A triangle is ½ × base × height; a circular bed is π × radius². For a long curving border, measure the widest length and width and accept that the waste percentage will absorb the curve. When in doubt, round each section up rather than down - a half-pallet short on installation day is a far bigger problem than a few extra rolls.

Waste & Overage

A 5–10% waste factor is standard for a mostly rectangular lawn; bump it to 10–15% for yards with lots of curves, trees, flower beds, or diagonal cuts, because every angled edge wastes the corner you slice off. Install Timing & Care

Sod is a living product on a clock. Schedule delivery for the same day you can install, ideally in the cool of morning, and never let stacked rolls sit on the pallet for more than a day in warm weather or they will heat and yellow. Prepare the soil first - loosen the top few inches, level it, and lightly dampen it before laying. Lay rows in a brick-stagger pattern with tight seams, roll the surface to press out air pockets, then water deeply right away and keep it consistently moist for the first two weeks while roots knit into the soil. Spring and early fall are the best installation windows in most climates.
