Sod Calculator

Calculate how much sod you need in square feet, pallets, and rolls, with a waste allowance and cost

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sod do I need?

Multiply the area length by width (or use total square feet for odd shapes), then add a 5–10% waste allowance for cuts and gaps. A 50 ft × 30 ft yard is 1,500 sq ft, or about 1,620 sq ft with 8% waste.

How many square feet is a pallet or roll of sod?

A standard pallet covers roughly 450 sq ft, and a typical roll is about 2 ft × 5 ft = 10 sq ft. A 1,620 sq ft order is about 4 pallets or 162 rolls, rounded up.

How much waste should I add?

Use 5–10% for a mostly rectangular lawn and 10–15% for yards with curves, trees, or flower beds, since every angled cut wastes a corner. Buying slightly extra is cheaper than coming up short on install day.

How soon should sod be installed after delivery?

Lay sod within about 24 hours of harvest - it is a living, perishable product. Schedule delivery for the day you can install, prep and dampen the soil first, then water deeply right after laying.
