Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the 2021 CKD-EPI equation race-free?
The 2021 update removed the race coefficient used in earlier versions, relying only on age, sex, and serum creatinine to estimate kidney function more equitably.
What do the CKD stages mean?
Stages run from G1 for an eGFR of 90 or above down to G5 below 15, which indicates kidney failure. Lower values reflect reduced filtering capacity.
What factors can cause eGFR to fluctuate day to day?
eGFR is calculated from serum creatinine, which rises transiently with intense exercise, a high-protein meal, dehydration, or muscle breakdown. A single low reading should be confirmed with a second test 2–3 months later before changing a CKD stage. Medications such as NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, and contrast agents can also acutely reduce GFR. Creatinine-based eGFR also systematically underestimates true GFR in people with low muscle mass, such as the elderly or those with malnutrition.
