Frequently Asked Questions
What is lean body mass?
Lean body mass is the weight of everything in your body except fat, including muscle, bone, organs, and water. This calculator estimates it with the Boer formula from your height and weight.
How accurate is the Boer formula?
It is one of the more reliable height-and-weight formulas, but it is still an estimate. A DEXA scan or skinfold test gives more precise body composition. These figures are for general information only and are not medical advice.
Why would I want to know my lean body mass?
LBM helps you set accurate daily protein targets, since recommendations are typically expressed per kilogram of lean mass rather than total body weight. It is also useful for tracking whether a diet is preserving muscle or causing lean tissue loss, adjusting medication and supplement doses that are weight-sensitive, and monitoring changes in body composition over time even when total weight stays the same.
My body fat percentage looks off. Why?
Formula-based body fat is an approximation, and very lean or very heavy individuals fall outside the formula range. For health decisions, discuss measured body composition with your doctor.
