Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert miles to steps?
Steps = distance ÷ stride length. One mile is 1,609.34 m; divide by your stride in meters. With a typical ~0.76 m stride, a mile is roughly 2,100 steps and a 5K (3.1 mi) is about 6,600 steps walking.
How many steps is a 5K or 10K?
Walking: a 5K is ~6,200–7,500 steps and a 10K is ~12,500–15,000, depending on stride. Running covers the same distance in fewer steps because running stride is longer.
Does this assume walking or running?
It uses your walking stride (height-derived). If you ran the distance, the true step count is lower - running stride is typically 1.4–1.6× longer than walking stride.
Why estimate steps from distance at all?
It is useful for setting realistic daily-step goals (e.g. "how far must I walk to add 4,000 steps?") and for treadmill or route planning when only distance is known.
