Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to lose 20 pounds?

At a 500 kcal/day deficit (1 lb/week pace), losing 20 pounds takes about 20 weeks. At a 1,000 kcal/day deficit (2 lb/week pace) it takes roughly 10 weeks. The 3,500 kcal per pound rule provides the estimate: 20 × 3,500 = 70,000 kcal total, divided by your daily deficit.

What is a safe rate of weight loss?

Most guidelines recommend 0.5 to 1 percent of body weight per week, which works out to roughly 0.5 to 2 lb per week for most adults. Faster rates increase the risk of muscle loss and nutrient deficiencies. Consult your doctor before attempting more than 2 lb per week.

Why is my actual loss slower than the calculator projects?

Metabolic adaptation, water retention, daily weight fluctuations, and untracked calorie intake all contribute. The projection assumes a perfectly consistent deficit and no metabolic slowdown. Track weekly averages over 4-week blocks for a more accurate picture of true progress.

Does exercise count toward the deficit?

Yes. The calculator uses a fixed daily deficit; you can achieve it through diet alone, exercise alone, or a combination. Adding exercise while moderately reducing food intake is typically more sustainable and preserves muscle better than diet restriction alone.
