Hair Growth Timeline Calculator

Estimate how many months it takes to grow your hair from a current length to a target length

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does hair grow?

Scalp hair averages about 0.5 in (1.25 cm) per month, or 6 in (15 cm) per year. Individual rates vary 0.3–0.7 in (0.75–1.75 cm) per month based on genetics, age, hormones and nutrition.

How long until my hair reaches a target length?

Months to target = (target length − current length) ÷ growth rate. Going from 8 in to 24 in at 0.5 in/month takes (24 − 8) ÷ 0.5 = 32 months, or about 2.5 years.

Why does length seem to plateau?

Each hair has a 2–7 year growth phase before shedding, which sets a maximum length for that person. Damage and breakage at the ends also cancel out new growth, so split ends and rough handling can make hair appear to stop growing.

Can I speed up hair growth?

You can't meaningfully change the genetic rate, but consistent protein and iron intake, scalp health, gentle handling and minimal heat damage protect what does grow. Trims do not change growth speed but reduce breakage, so net length increases faster.
