Frequently Asked Questions
What is the carbon footprint of beef compared to chicken?
Beef produces about 25 kg CO2e per kg of meat, while chicken produces about 4.5 kg CO2e per kg - roughly a 5:1 ratio. Beef is high because cattle produce methane (a potent greenhouse gas) during digestion, require large areas of land, and have poor feed conversion ratios. Lamb and mutton are similarly high-impact.
How much CO2 can I save by eating less meat?
Replacing one beef meal per week with chicken saves roughly 50-100 kg CO2e per year. Replacing all beef with plant-based proteins (beans, lentils, tofu) could save 400-600 kg CO2e per year for an average meat eater. Studies show that a vegan diet has roughly half the carbon footprint of an omnivore diet.
Is fish a low-carbon protein source?
It depends heavily on the species and catch method. Wild-caught small pelagic fish (sardines, mackerel, herring) are among the lowest-carbon proteins at 1-2 kg CO2e/kg. However, farmed shrimp can produce 12+ kg CO2e/kg due to mangrove destruction and intensive feed use. Bottom-trawling fishing has very high fuel and bycatch costs.
