How This Calculator Works

A perfume is, chemically, a small fraction of fragrance oil dissolved in a much larger volume of carrier - almost always high-proof perfumer's alcohol (190-proof ethanol), sometimes a neutral carrier oil for skin-safe roll-ons. The label categories - Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum/Extrait - are simply marketing names for ranges of that oil-to-carrier ratio. This calculator turns a target ratio (e.g. "20% Eau de Parfum strength") and a target bottle size (e.g. 30 ml or 1 oz) into the exact volumes of oil and carrier to combine, reported in both millilitres and fluid ounces so you can use whichever measuring tools (graduated pipettes, beakers, dropper bottles) you have on hand.

Formula / Method

Oil volume = total volume × (concentration ÷ 100). Carrier volume = total volume − oil volume. The relationship assumes volume-by-volume blending (v/v), which is the standard for hobby and indie perfumery; for industrially precise weight-by-weight (w/w) formulations the densities of oil and ethanol differ slightly (~0.87 vs ~0.79 g/ml) so the weight-based percentage will not match the volume-based percentage exactly, but the v/v figure is what nearly every published "5% EDT" recipe means. Worked Example

You want a 30 ml bottle of Eau de Parfum at 20% concentration. Oil = 30 × 0.20 = 6 ml of fragrance oil. Carrier = 30 − 6 = 24 ml of perfumer's alcohol. Pour 6 ml of oil into a clean amber bottle, top up with 24 ml of 190-proof ethanol, cap, and shake. For a 1 oz (29.57 ml) bottle at 5% EDT strength: 29.57 × 0.05 ≈ 1.48 ml oil + 28.10 ml alcohol. Note how a 5% blend uses only a quarter of the oil that a 20% blend does for the same bottle size - which is why parfum extracts are dramatically more expensive than colognes.

Common Mistakes

Using rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) or vodka - both contain too much water, leave a harsh smell, and ruin the dry-down. Use 190-proof / 95% pure ethanol or specialist perfumer's alcohol.

Skipping the maceration period - freshly blended perfume smells "raw" and only fully integrates after 2–6 weeks of dark, cool resting.

Confusing percent by weight with percent by volume; for hobby work, stick to one method and label your formula.

Overshooting concentration on a skin-test patch - some materials (oakmoss, cinnamon, citrus) are sensitisers and must stay below IFRA-recommended caps regardless of total strength.

Storing in clear glass on a sunny shelf - UV destroys top notes in weeks; use amber or dark blue bottles in a cool cupboard.
