Projector Throw Distance Calculator

Calculate projector throw distance, image size, and lumens needed from throw ratio, screen diagonal, aspect ratio, and ambient light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What throw ratio do I need?

Measure your room: longest reasonable throw distance divided by desired image width. A 12-foot room with a 100-inch image needs ratio ≈ 12 · 12 / 87 = 1.65 - a standard projector.

How many lumens for a living room?

1500 to 2500 lumens in dim light; 3000+ for daytime with curtains open. Home-theater black-out room is fine with 1000 to 1500.

Is throw ratio fixed?

Only on fixed-lens models. Most projectors have zoom that varies throw ratio over a 10 to 30 percent range; check your manual.
