Sleep calculator: find how much sleep do I need by age, recommended sleep hours, and track sleep deprivation with weekly sleep debt totals

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sleep do I need by age?

National Sleep Foundation guidelines: newborns 14–17 hrs, infants 12–15, toddlers 11–14, preschool 10–13, school-age 9–11, teens 8–10, adults 7–9, older adults (65+) 7–8 hours per 24 hours.

How is sleep debt calculated?

Daily debt = recommended sleep − actual sleep (negative = surplus). Weekly debt = daily debt × 7. Sleeping 6 hours when you need 8 builds 2 hrs/day = 14 hrs of debt in a week.

Can I "catch up" on sleep on the weekend?

Partially. One or two recovery nights can blunt acute fatigue, but research suggests weekend catch-up does not fully reverse the metabolic and cognitive effects of chronic weekday sleep loss. Consistent nightly sleep is far more effective.

What if I feel fine on less sleep than recommended?

A small genetic minority truly needs only 5–6 hours, but self-reported "I'm fine" is unreliable - performance and reaction-time tests usually show clear deficits. If you wake without an alarm and feel alert all day, you are probably getting enough.
