How do I compute drinks from any drink?

Standard drinks = (volume oz × ABV × 0.789) ÷ 0.6, where 0.789 is ethanol density (g/mL). A 16 oz craft beer at 8% ABV = (16 × 0.08 × 0.789) ÷ 0.6 ≈ 1.7 standard drinks - nearly double a "normal" pint.

How This Calculator Works

In the United States, a standard drink is defined by the NIAAA and the Dietary Guidelines as any beverage containing 14 grams (~0.6 fl oz) of pure ethanol. That is the amount in a 12 oz can of 5% beer, a 5 oz pour of 12% wine, or a 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirits - the three reference servings most people picture when they hear "one drink." This tool converts any beverage size and any alcohol-by-volume (ABV) percent into the equivalent number of US standard drinks, plus the underlying grams of ethanol, so a 16 oz craft IPA at 7.2% ABV can be honestly compared to a 5 oz glass of 14% Zinfandel. It is not a BAC (blood-alcohol concentration) calculator - it does not estimate impairment, legal driving limits, or absorption time. It simply counts the alcohol in the glass.

Formula / Method

Pure ethanol volume = beverage volume × (ABV ÷ 100). Standard drinks = pure ethanol fl oz ÷ 0.6. Equivalently, grams of ethanol = pure ethanol mL × 0.789 g/mL (the density of ethanol at room temperature), and that result ÷ 14 also gives the number of US standard drinks. The 0.789 g/mL constant and the 14 g threshold are the figures published by the NIAAA. Worked Example

A 16 oz pour of a 7.2% IPA: pure ethanol = 16 × 0.072 = 1.152 fl oz. Standard drinks = 1.152 ÷ 0.6 ≈ 1.92 standard drinks - nearly two, not one, despite being a single glass. In grams: 1.152 × 29.5735 × 0.789 ≈ 26.9 g of ethanol. By contrast, a 12 oz domestic lager at 4.2% works out to 12 × 0.042 ÷ 0.6 ≈ 0.84 drinks - barely more than four-fifths of one. A 1.5 oz shot of 40% (80-proof) vodka: 1.5 × 0.40 ÷ 0.6 = exactly 1.0 standard drink, the canonical reference. The lesson is that bigger glasses and higher ABV craft beverages routinely deliver 1.5–2× what a casual eye estimates.

Common Mistakes

Confusing proof with ABV in the US - proof is twice the ABV (80-proof = 40% ABV). The calculator wants ABV.

Assuming "a glass of wine" is one drink - restaurant pours are commonly 6–9 oz, not the 5 oz reference serving.

Counting a tall-can craft beer as a single drink because it's in one container; a 19.2 oz tallboy at 8% is ≈2.56 standard drinks.

Mixing US and international standards - the UK "unit" is 8 g, Australia 10 g, Japan 20 g; do not compare numbers across borders.

Treating standard-drink count as a BAC or impairment estimate. BAC depends on body weight, sex, food, time, and metabolism - none of which this tool measures.

What are the US low-risk limits? The 2020 Dietary Guidelines suggest no more than 2 standard drinks/day for men and 1/day for women, with many health bodies now arguing the lower-risk number is closer to zero. Does freezing or warming change the math? No - ABV is reported on the label at 20°C and the calculation is volumetric, so a chilled beer and a warm beer of the same size contain the same ethanol. What about "non-alcoholic" beer? Beverages labelled non-alcoholic in the US can contain up to 0.5% ABV; a 12 oz can would still register ≈0.10 standard drinks. Are cocktails predictable? Not really - a strong Manhattan or Negroni can pack 2–3 standard drinks; enter the spirit volume(s) separately for a true count. Why the 0.789 constant? That is the density of pure ethanol at room temperature, which converts the volume of alcohol in your drink into the gram-based threshold the guidelines actually use.
