Standard Drinks Calculator

Calculate the number of US standard drinks (0.6 oz / 14 g ethanol) in a beverage from volume and ABV

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a U.S. standard drink?

One U.S. standard drink contains 0.6 fl oz (14 g) of pure ethanol. That equals 12 oz beer at 5% ABV, 5 oz wine at 12% ABV, or 1.5 oz spirits at 40% ABV - each delivers the same ethanol dose.

How do I compute drinks from any drink?

Standard drinks = (volume oz × ABV × 0.789) ÷ 0.6, where 0.789 is ethanol density (g/mL). A 16 oz craft beer at 8% ABV = (16 × 0.08 × 0.789) ÷ 0.6 ≈ 1.7 standard drinks - nearly double a "normal" pint.

How do U.S. and other standards differ?

A "standard drink" varies: U.S. 14 g, UK 8 g (1 unit), Australia 10 g, Japan 19.75 g. Always use the right country's definition when reading guidelines - UK 14 units/wk ≠ U.S. 14 drinks/wk.

What are typical low-risk limits?

U.S. Dietary Guidelines: ≤ 2 standard drinks/day for men, ≤ 1 for women. Canada's 2023 guidance is much stricter (≤ 2/week for any risk reduction). Informational only - not medical or treatment advice.
