How This Calculator Works

Enter the room length and width in feet (with optional inches) or in meters, a waste percentage, and optionally the coverage printed on each box of flooring. The calculator returns the exact floor area, the total square footage you should buy once waste is added, and - if you supply box coverage - the number of boxes to purchase and how much material is left over. Because dye lots and wood grain vary between production runs, you should always buy your full quantity (including waste) in a single order; matching a partial box months later is difficult or impossible.

Formula

Floor area = Length × Width. Total material needed = Area × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Boxes to buy = ⌈Total needed ÷ coverage per box⌉, rounded up because you cannot purchase a fraction of a box. Leftover = (Boxes × coverage) − total needed. The standard waste allowance is 10% for straight-lay installation, 15% for a diagonal (45°) layout that creates more perimeter cut-offs, and up to 20% for herringbone or other complex patterns where every piece must align precisely.

Worked Example

A room 12 ft × 10 ft has an area of 120 sq ft. With a 10% waste factor, total material needed = 120 × 1.10 = 132 sq ft. If each box of luxury vinyl plank covers 20 sq ft, boxes = ⌈132 ÷ 20⌉ = ⌈6.6⌉ = 7 boxes, which physically cover 140 sq ft, leaving 8 sq ft of usable spare for future repairs.

Common Mistakes

Buying exactly the room area with no waste - cuts at walls and a few defective planks will leave you short.

Measuring an L-shaped room as a single rectangle - split it into rectangles, compute each area, then add them.

Rounding boxes down instead of up - you can never buy a partial box, so always round up.

Ignoring grout joints when buying tile - add the joint width to each tile's nominal size for true installed coverage.

Forgetting that carpet is sold by the square yard - divide square footage by 9 to convert.
