Frequently Asked Questions
What makes two triangles congruent?
All corresponding sides and angles are equal. Equivalently, any of SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, or HL holds. The triangles are exact copies of each other (up to reflection).
Why is SSA not enough?
Given two sides and a non-included angle, there can be two non-congruent triangles satisfying the data. This is the ambiguous case of the law of sines.
Congruent versus similar?
Congruent triangles are also similar, with scale factor 1. Similar triangles match in shape (equal angles and proportional sides) but can differ in size.
