How This Calculator Works

Buying wallpaper by guesswork is risky: order too little and you may never match the dye lot again, order far too much and you have wasted hundreds of dollars. This calculator turns a few room measurements into a confident roll count. You enter the room's length, width, and ceiling height in feet, the number of doors and windows, and the dimensions of the roll you plan to buy. The tool computes the total wall area using the room perimeter, subtracts standard allowances for each opening, divides the remaining area by the coverage of one roll, rounds up, and then adds one full extra roll as a buffer for waste, trimming, and pattern matching.

Formula

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height. Deductions = doors × 20 sq ft + windows × 15 sq ft. Usable area = wall area − deductions (never below zero). Coverage per roll = (roll width in inches ÷ 12) × roll length in feet, converting the width to feet so both dimensions share units. Rolls needed = ceiling(usable area ÷ coverage per roll) + 1. The ceiling function rounds up because you cannot buy a partial roll, and the +1 covers real-world losses.

Worked Example

A 14 ft × 12 ft room with 9 ft ceilings, one door, and one window, using a European-style roll 20.5 in wide × 33 ft long. Wall area = 2 × (14 + 12) × 9 = 468 sq ft. Deductions = 1 × 20 + 1 × 15 = 35 sq ft, so usable area = 433 sq ft. Coverage per roll = (20.5 ÷ 12) × 33 ≈ 56.4 sq ft. Rolls = ceiling(433 ÷ 56.4) + 1 = ceiling(7.68) + 1 = 8 + 1 = 9 rolls.
